Using the VPN client
Solution:

Miami has an Internet firewall that restricts the functions that can be performed by computers that are NOT directly connected to Miami's network. VPN allows a computer connecting from off campus to behave as if it is on campus.

For example, to establish a Banner connection from off-campus, use the VPN client.

The following instructions for using the Cisco AnyConnect VPN client assume you have already installed the software. If this is not the case, please see the related article, Installing the Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client, for installation instructions.

Details:

Using the Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client

  1. Open the VPN Client
    • Windows Users: Start the VPN client by going to the Start menu and selecting Programs, Cisco, then Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client.

    • Macintosh Users: Start the VPN client by clicking on the Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client icon/application located in your Applications folder, located under Macintosh HD.

  2. The Connect to: field should be pre-populated with muvpn.muohio.edu; if it does not show, type that value into that field.

  3. Enter your Miami UniqueID and MUnet password and click Connect.

  4. Click the Connect button. You will be prompted to type in your username and password. This is your Miami UniqueID and MUnet password.

  5. After a few moments, the window should become hidden. Macintosh users will see a lock icon in the MacOS Apple toolbar (near the top-right of your screen); Windows users will see it in the Windows System Tray (near the clock in the bottom-right of your screen).

Disconnecting from Miami VPN

To close the VPN connection between your computer and Miami's network, simply right-click (control-click for Mac users) the Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client icon (in the System Tray for Windows or the Apple Toolbar for Macintosh) and select Disconnect.
